U.S. stocks opened sharply higher on Tuesday as key corporate earnings outperform estimates and optimism in the economy remains.
The Dow Jones industrial average spiked 250 points higher, breaking above 26,000 for the first time. The 30-stock index was boosted by gains in UnitedHealth and Merck. The Dow first traded above 25,000 on Jan. 4.
The S&P 500 gained 0.5 percent and traded above 2,800 for the first time. Consumer discretionary stocks were the best performers in the index. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.7 percent and also hit a record.
